UX Design

A redesign of the ecommerce shopping app, TEMU

Brief Overview

A redesign of the app, Temu, known for their low-priced goods and fast shipping speeds.

Context

Context

Temu is a popular shopping website known for their low-priced goods and fast shipping speeds. Created and developed by Park Je-Nak in 2022, Whaleco Technology Limited has continued to cater to their customers to this day.

Temu features a variety of products to purchase from including a games section which advertises and offers discounts depending on the event.

Identifying the Problem

Identifying the Problem

While the app itself is sustainable, the amount of information displayed when viewing certain pages was very much overwhelming.

Additionally, ad popups for their games section was too prevelant and interrupted the user shopping experience.

With this in mind, our mission was to find a way to reduce visual strain and craft a much more seamless flow.

Inspiration

Taking a look at other applications, we were able to draw ideas and connections for the redesign. Many of these examples look sleek and modernized.

Screens and illustrations are detailed but not to the point where it's overbearing. Information is key when shopping but it shouldn't completely overtake the process.

User Journey Mapping

User Journey Mapping

Afterward we mapped out the steps a consumer might take when using Temu. This process starts from determining their goal in visiting the app to the final stage in receiving the package and writing a review for it.

Additionally we identified problems the app has and ways it could potentially fix them.

3 Different Concepts

Each of us created and designed different wireframes and layouts each pretaining in a different style.

Concept #1 - Vince

Concept #2 - Ci My

Concept #3 - Lethrese

Classmate

@Concept1

I really like concept #1, its very clean and looks easy to navigate

Classmate

@Concept3

i like the colors and the images, but i find the white text with black overstroke a bit weird and tacky looking.

Classmate

@Concept2

Also I know there colors are orange but I actually really like the red used in the first concept

Classmate

@Concept2

Replacings some of the text with images really helps to declutter the screen

Classmate

@Concept3

I really like the visual hierarchy on the profile page. The whole layout is nice.

Classmate

@Concept2

I like how simple you made concept 2 because temu is very overwhelming to me

Reflection

Overall, this project has resolidied my knowledge in UI design. Temu has such an information heavy interface that it was difficult to discern what was necessary versus what was fluff. Also catering to user needs while keeping the identity of the brand in tact was especially a challenge for the entire team.

In terms of what I would do differently, I would have liked to make the Games category more prominent. While what we had included in the final was neater than what was in the app, the category should have had a stronger place on the landing page. My thoughts follow similarly with the Genre page.

In conclusion, I believe my team and I performed to the best of our abilities. Individually, I still have much to improve and I am proud of what we had accomplished.

Final Product

Final Product

After receiving feedback from peers and our class instructor, we continued to review and revised our conceptions. We incorporated different elements from each of our designs into a single high fidelity prototype.

Prototyping

Adding micro-interactions, I incorporated these into our final design screens. These include small details such as a dynamic island navigation bar, progress indicators and a slideshow carosel.
